My new mission: duotone photos and street art

I have to admit I'm not seeing many creative possibilities with the idea of creating a video from duotone photographs and adding text showing a bit of Sarah's history. Maybe the idea needs to sink in a little more to have a lightbulb moment. I'll get my camera out anyway and see what happens.

After having a chat with Alastair, my other project for the week is to create a large image in one of the locations associated with Sarah Records and film it. For ease of putting it together he suggested using paper that I'd already cut out at home, then just go and assemble it. I'd film the process. I suggested it be one of the actual album covers.

All of Sarah Records' compilation albums were linked to a place in the Bristol/South West area. The release numbers were the buses to get to these places.

Sarah 587 - Shadow Factory (1988)

Hadn't heard this term before, so was interesting to dig into:

"British shadow factories were the outcome of the Shadow Scheme, a plan devised in 1935 and developed by the British Government in the buildup to World War II to try to meet the urgent need for more aircraft using technology transfer from the motor industry to implement additional manufacturing capacity. The term 'shadow' was not intended to mean secrecy, but rather the protected environment they would receive by being staffed by all levels of skilled motor industry people alongside (in the shadow of) their own similar motor industry operations."

Assume it’s the one in Temple Cloud: A WWII shadow factory, used by Bristol Aeroplane Co., set in an old quarry. Now a trading estate. Album image: view down Welsh Back from Bristol Bridge

Sarah 376 - Temple Cloud (1990)

Temple Cloud is a village in Chew Valley in Somerset. Album image: unknown

Sarah 545 - Air Balloon Road (1990)

A main road in St. George's (not far from me!) Album image: not a location - a bowl featuring the logo 'cherries'

Sarah 501 - Glass Arcade (1991)

St Nicholas’ market. Album image: the arcade

Sarah 583 - Fountain Island (1992)

Location: unknown Album image: House in Gwilliam Street, Bristol

Sarah 628 - Engine Common (1993)

Album image: the former Industrial Museum

Sarah 530 - Gaol Ferry Bridge (1994)

Bridges the 'New Cut' in Bristol Harbour which was dug in 1804.

Sarah 359 - Battery Point (1995)

Portishead Point lighthouse.

Sarah 100 - There And Back Again Lane (1995)

Side road just off of Park Street. Interestingly, people usually nick the street sign, so Bristol Council have given up replacing it. Album image: Clifton Suspension bridge

Another initial thought when digging into the places linked to the albums is I could create quite a quick print-based drawn map and lino print image relating to the album and make that into a mini zine. However, after even more digging, the record label already did it:

Though in my head, I was imagining mine as being over-printed.
